Even as cricket enthusiasts across the country are eagerly waiting for Indian Premier League’s eleventh edition kick-off this weekend, Hyderabadi youth are in for a double treat. Furthering the spirit of friendly-policing motto of the Telangana police, Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar has announced ‘Hyderabad Police League (HPL)’, a T 20 cricket series for youngsters to be organised by the police department for free. Matches would start early morning and end by 10.30 am.
The inaugural match would be held at Barkas grounds in Chandrayangutta on April 21and the finals at LB Stadium. A few matches might be played in the evening as per the requirement. “The purpose of the HPC T 20 series is to drive home amessage among young people of the city that police are not just law enforcers, but they are also your friends who care about your well-being. Since cricket is kind of a religion in our country, we have decided to strengthen the community connect with the police department through the game,” Anjani Kumar told KhabarLive.
To make HPL a hit, sector sub-inspectors of law and order police stations in Hyderabad commissionerate have started the groundwork by identifying youngsters from colonies in their jurisdiction to form teams.
Each station has about three sectors and each sector will have at least a team. The teams from each station jurisdiction will play against one another and the best performer, on points basis, will play against division-level best performers.
“Division-level winners will compete against one another to participate in the zonal-level games, which are like semifinals,” the commissioner said.
“We will also have a women’s team and each team will have a colour and theme, which symbolises the locality they are representing,” Anjani Kumar added.
Police are planning to seek support from Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) and former players of Hyderabad to motivate the youth to participate in the tournament. Police would associate with the Sports Authority of Telangana in conducting the tournament.
There would be special awards for highest scorer, highest wicket-taker, best strike rate, most sixes , most catches, best partnership, best wicketkeeping and best throw for run outs. #KhabarLive
